Royal Princess: Classic Elegance Meets Modern Cruise Life
Back in July 2018, I had the pleasure of spending the day onboard Royal Princess. I still remember how it felt stepping into that sweeping Piazza, all polished marble, soft lighting, and the unmistakable buzz of something special. There’s a reason this ship continues to be a favourite for so many travellers.
Launched in 2013 and christened by none other than Catherine, Princess of Wales (you’ll spot her christening-day dress in a glass case on Deck 5), Royal Princess marked a bold new era for Princess Cruises at the time. And despite over a decade at sea, she still holds her own thanks to elegant design, thoughtful spaces, and a few clever features you don’t find just anywhere.
The SeaWalk: Not for the Faint-Hearted
Let’s talk about one of Royal Princess’ most memorable features — the SeaWalk. Suspended 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship and made entirely of glass, it offers a view that’ll either wow you or wobble your knees (maybe both). It’s one of those “you have to try it” moments, especially if you want that once-in-a-cruise photo opp.
Dining That Surprises and Delights
If you’re anything like me, food is a big part of the cruise experience, and Royal Princess doesn’t disappoint. From casual grab-and-go bites to multi-course speciality meals, there’s plenty to explore. I loved the layout and variety at Horizon Court (which includes a dedicated pastry room — yes, really), and the three main dining rooms offer everything from flexible dining to traditional set times.
On select itineraries, Princess adds even more regional flair. Alaskan sailings include a “Wild for Alaska” seafood menu, while sailings Down Under feature local specialities like Tasmanian salmon and Aussie lamb. And with Princess Plus or Premier packages, you can enjoy extra value with casual dining included — think Alfredo’s Pizza or the Ocean Terrace for seafood lovers.
Entertainment with Heart (and a Bit of Glitz)
There’s something special about entertainment that doesn’t just dazzle but also feels well-crafted. That’s what you’ll find on Royal Princess. The Princess Theatre offers excellent sightlines and a mix of live shows, comedians, and guest acts.
The ship’s Piazza is where the fun really kicks off in the evenings. Expect everything from live music and themed dance nights (80s, ABBA, you name it) to the ever-popular Champagne Waterfall. It’s also home to pop-up performances, people-watching, and the high-energy “Voice of the Ocean” karaoke competition that runs the entire cruise.
Pools, Loungers & Lounging Around
Let’s be honest, sea days are for sunbathing, snoozing, and sipping something cold. While the main pool area can get busy, there are quieter options. The Retreat Pool is adult-only and feels like a bit of a hidden gem, and if you really want to treat yourself, The Sanctuary offers a private, shaded sun deck with plush loungers and a more serene vibe (there’s a charge, but many find it well worth it).
At night, the pool deck transforms with the Water & Light Show — jets, lights, music, and a little Vegas-style spectacle. And don’t miss Movies Under the Stars, complete with fleece blankets and fresh popcorn.
A Word on Cabins
From the inside staterooms to suites, cabins aboard Royal Princess are thoughtfully designed, with comfy beds, decent storage, and that signature Princess layout that feels both practical and a little bit plush. Just a heads up — there are no oceanview cabins (you either go inside or opt for a balcony), and most cabins still rely on good old-fashioned plugs over USBs, so plan accordingly.
Final Thoughts
Royal Princess might not be the flashiest ship afloat, but she nails what so many cruisers are looking for: comfort, elegance, thoughtful touches, and a balance of lively fun and peaceful hideaways. It’s a ship that feels just right for couples, solo travellers, multigenerational families, and anyone who appreciates a cruise done well.
Whether you’re heading for the Med, the Caribbean, or an adventure in Alaska, Royal Princess offers a classic cruise experience with all the modern comforts you need.
